Unemployed? Read Up On State-Provided Training

Unemployment rates in many states have reached double digits, keeping many from getting the jobs that they need to be successful and financially secure. It is difficult for many to find the jobs that they need to keep income flowing into their families. Luckily, there are options for those who are unemployed. Different types of training programs work to get people the jobs that they need.

There are also opportunities for individuals to get the training that they need through certificate programs and associate’s degree programs. For some, state-based training programs are the right training for their needs. For others, college-led training courses are the only way to get the job that they are looking for. Take the time to compare these state-based training programs against college resources to understand which avenue is right for you.

STEP Program

The Alaskan STEP program provides the unemployed with the training that they need to add to their overall skill set. After meeting with a career counselor, those who are unemployed with a job history will be connected to various training programs. While this is a strong program, it fails to provide job help to those who have been out of work for extended periods of time. Online degrees are not based on previous employment, helping those who have been removed from the workforce to get the education that they need to secure a job. The Alaskan STEP program also provides fewer training opportunities, as far as different work sectors are concerned. The wide variety of options provided by certificate programs and associate degrees allows individuals to train for different, more interesting careers.

WIA Program

The Workforce Investment Act or WIA program, created in 1998, is a national program. This WIA provides funding for basic skills and occupational training, connecting the unemployed with various free training opportunities.

While this program can be beneficial, it has its downfalls. The program moves to train people in the job markets that are growing. While this is beneficial, this is not the right choice for someone who has career aspirations in careers that are not considered to be growing or “hot”.

Training programs for the unemployed may not be able to provide you with the education that you need. The training dates are set, and the careers that you can be trained in are set. Achieving a certificate or associate’s degree from a college will allow you to get the type of training that you want, when you want it.

But state-based training programs aren’t necessarily the wrong choice. For some people, unemployment benefits and training programs for the unemployed are the perfect avenues to pursue, as they provide free training. Others will find that colleges with certificate programs and associate’s degrees will be more beneficial. Compare these different programs to completely understand what you would gain from each avenue. In the end, you will be able to choose the training that is right for you, helping you to be as successful as possible.

  1. Even though there are still training programs offered by certain government agencies or private companies, still the unemployment rate in states is continuously rising. It’s sad how the economic status affects millions of people who are struggling to find job just to provide food for their families.
