What To Know About Social Marketing

social_sitesThere has been a lot of talk over the past year or so about sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Digg, and many others.  However, most people thought these sites were for young people, or just hobbies, but many people including business owners are starting to rethink that approach and are now embracing these social sites with increased marketing efforts.

The following is an overview of some of the top social sites and what to know about them.

What To Know About Social Sites:

  • Facebook - Is the second largest social site in the world, just behind Myspace in terms of users, but that may be surpassed in the next few months, which would make this the largest social site.  It has many features on it for personal and business use.  The real trick is build up a following or fan bases.  For individuals, these means creating a profile and sharing things with your social network including family and friends.  For businesses, there are pages and groups, and this is where companies can interact with the Facebook audience and share things that would be both beneficial and productive.  In addition, this site has a high PR value so any links or clicks coming from this site is highly sought after.
  • Twitter - Quickly becoming the most popular social site in the world.  Over the past year the growth on this site is off the chart high.  Many companies, people, media outlets, and bloggers have embraced this platform and it looks like it will continue to grow over the next year or so.  This site doesn’t have as much interactivity as other social sites, but people are finding ways to use it for both personal and business use.  The main thing here is to find people that are interested in the subject matter that you will be sharing and follow those people as they will benefit from the content that is being put out. In addition, there are ways to watch certain subjects or industries and this is a good tool for keeping up on what is going on.
  • Digg - This is a good social bookmarking site and makes it easy for people to share links and websites that they like.  The site makes is easy to submit and the site ranks really well on search engines. This means that submitting a site here could get ranked higher in most cases than the actual page or website submitted. The reason is that Digg.com has a lot higher PR and gets crawled more often and quicker than most sites.  In addition the Digg site has really good on page SEO value so links on there get good relevance.

These sites are the largest socializing places on the web right now, and most likely will last, but there have been numerous start-ups and new social sites coming online over the past year. Some are starting to make waves, while others have already gone down in flames.  The golden rule here is to check out the community, see how engaging it is, check to see how long it has been online, and how many users are currently on the system. All of these things will help determine if the social site is something worth putting an effort and time into. Some sites look good at first, but then disappear pretty quickly so keep in mind that some will not last.

  1. Interesting post thanks!

I always though Facebook has more users (about 90m). Social Media (SM) is a new baby which has a life ahead; how we grow this baby is crucial to the life cycle and the value it can add to one’s business. Currently many businesses are taking advantage of this phenomena; but still struggling to see the result. There are chanllenges face businesses which require passion and systematic management. In short we need to have our purpose defined and set goals for SM. However it is not suitable to every business and any Social Network Site (SNS) shouldn’t be used. SM and utilising SNS must be critically assessed and evaluated to enjoy the end result, i.e. PR, exposure etc.
