Adult Education - An Investment In Yourself

Adult Education An Investment In YourselfAre you wanting to get more education, but worried that you are too old? Don’t worry… just go for it! Thousands of adult students, often known as return, reentry, or non-traditional students, have found themselves happier in their schooling as adults than they ever were as kids. Face it: education is often wasted on the young, who lack the experience to understand the real worth of school, or self-discipline to get the most out of what they are offered. Adult education is often far more rewarding than previous experience with schools may have been.

Mature students find that their experiences have taught them the worth of education. Kids often fail to understand that jobs depend on clear demonstration of academic ability…and that the training involved and the knowledge gained affects not only hiring, but status, income, promotional opportunities, and job-satisfaction.

For many teachers the mature student, returning to get an adult education, is better positioned to succeed brilliantly than anyone else in the classroom. Regardless of whether an adult is back for a GED or completed college degree, or an advanced degree or a specialized certificate, an adult student is likely to be disciplined and highly motivated to perform well.

With the many, many choices open to you, you should be able to find something to suit your goals, your resources, and your budget. There are adult education options in everything from community colleges to online colleges, and hundreds of licensed suppliers of programs for certification and licensing in a number of careers or specialties.

Learning what is out there is often a matter of Googling and making a few phone calls: simple and efficient. Once you know what you want to do…get a certificate as a radiologist, learn a programming language, or get a degree – you can search for adult education in that area of study. Your local high schools and colleges should also be able to provide information, not just on their own programs, but information on the entire range of possible educational paths you may want to take. Most community colleges have incredible resources to help you learn what your options are — and in many cases they have counselors who can help you in person, too.

The fear that you are too old is a bad reason not to return to get an adult education and there are thousands of good reasons why you are just the right age! There is no better time than now: for you, for your family, for your community and for your nation. We need good minds well prepared, and by following your dream and achieving your goals you can do the world good — and improve your sense of worth and your satisfaction with your life a thousand-fold.

  1. I’ve heard “I’ll be 60 when I graduate”. Guess what? You’ll be sixty in 4 years anyway, whether you go back to school or not.

  2. Ann, that is one funny comment. I had to laugh out loud, and although it is a serious subject, people do come up with some strange excuses on why they can’t go back to school. Heck, I’ve gone back twice already and earn two degrees, and I’m thinking about going back again for another. It’s not that I’m trying to advance my career, or even switch jobs, it’s more of the knowledge that I gain and how I want to fill my time with learning new things rather than doing the same thing over and over again. I hope to go back to school one of these days to learn astronomy, and not that it will benefit me in any way, but it’s something I think is cool to learn.

  4. Hi,
Adult education is the teaching and educating of adult learners. It encompasses fields such as basic education, adult literacy, in-service education and general education.

  5. Adult education is totally cool I went back to Massage School in the State of Washington at the age of 40 this is not just a weekend deal over 1000 hrs of training in Anatomy, Kinesiology, Techniques, and more. It took a year. and i gained allot of knowledge. I am not useing it right now but just the brain stimulation alone was worth it.

I think going back to school late in life should be totally for you and to keep you young. Kind of looking to go back to learn something else now!
    Thanks

  7. When you are going back to school, in whatever form that is, you really have to have some time management skills, especially if you are a parent and have a family. It is an investment that is worth it however, so in whatever way you can make that work for yourself…. go for it!
